Gen-DER

Gender:

The state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social or cultural differences rather than biological ones).

Androgyny:

Having the characteristics or nature of both male and female.

The Gen-DER collection

It captures the essence of the decisions we make when we create the image which we put forward to the world. In particular, the increasing emergence of gender fluidity in our culture invites us all to examine our own willingness to blur the lines. The traditional gender roles are no longer what they were - even one generation ago. With this ongoing evolution, our personal statement about where we wish to identify ourselves can often be seen first in our appearance.
As hairstylists we are skilled at creating ‘polish’ and are highly trained in cutting precision lines. Having been a stylist for over 30 years, I wanted to really challenge myself by working with rawness. The Gen-DER collection is less about using the hair to create a preconceived look and far more about working with hair in a synergistic way to capture looks which are rough, raw, androgynous and beautiful. It is all about texture and movement.
My goal is for the viewer to feel drawn into the images rather than just scan them as they walk past. Gen-DER evokes a sense of mystery whereby the models, makeup, styling and hair asks the audience: What am I portraying about myself and my choices? Am I male? Am I female? Do I expose elements of YOUR conflict or decisions about appearance? Can you connect to the fluidity in the hair and mood that promotes your own response to gender?
